Successful Negotiation Skills

Successful Negotiation Skills

Have you ever needed your team to have better relationships with each other to increase productivity? Would you like to improve your influencing skills to achieve the outcomes you believe in?

Negotiation

The ability to put your point across is vital when you need to present the best possible project or complete the most effective sales deal. Developing your negotiation and influencing skills will develop your communication skills, confidence and improve your relationships with your team and clients.

The whole subject of developing your negotiation skills may seem daunting, especially if you are not a natural communicator. Leadership expert Simon Sinek sums up the key to influencing others which is the key to negotiation:

“People don’t buy WHAT you do; they buy WHY you do it.

We are drawn to leaders and organizations that are good at communicating what they believe. Their ability to make us feel like we belong, to make us feel special, safe and not alone is part of what gives them the ability to inspire us.”

The first key to successful negotiation skills is to present your case so that the other person can buy into your idea. They need to believe in your story through your visual description and feel the emotion of your idea. As Sinek says, this enables the other person to feel a part of your strategy and thus inspired to participate.

Write down your aim for the outcome as you would write down an affirmation – a SMART goal presented visually and emotionally so that YOU can buy into your strategy fully. Know WHY you need to influence the other person to buy into your strategy.

A written strategy will give you the confidence to take control in any given situation. If you believe this strategy is the best for you and your organisation, you will lead the direction of the negotiation.

You need to be fully committed to your “why” so that you feel emotionally charged to persuade another person to accept your strategy.  Effective persuasion towards the other person is the next key to developing successful negotiation skills. Confidence and authority in your position is vital to influencing them positively.

Developing effective negotiation skills will improve your career opportunities as well as your success in meetings and sales deals, and your effectiveness as an inspiring leader. It will also enable you to get more of what you want to achieve in your home life.
